Pompano Beach Connects 1,000 OASIS Residential Customers

On January 27th, the City of Pompano Beach OASIS Reuse Program connected its 1,000th reuse residential customer. Not only will this customer help to conserve our finite drinking water supply, but they can also irrigate any day of the week.

OASIS is an acronym for Our Alternative Supply Irrigation System. It is a reuse water system designed to allow highly treated wastewater that would originally be destined for the ocean outfall to be used on lawns. OASIS water is continuously tested to ensure all local, state, and federal quality and safety standards are met.

Reuse is used at City golf courses, parks, road medians, schools, more than 300 multi-family and commercial properties and 1,000 single-family residential properties in Pompano Beach and Lighthouse Point.

“Reuse water has greatly benefitted our customers by providing a sustainable, drought-proof water supply for irrigation and has conserved over 20 billion gallons of water from the Biscayne Aquifer,” said Mayor Rex Hardin, “This allows us to reduce future potable water demands.”

OASIS offers residents four main benefits:

  • No cost to hook up or annual inspection fees for single-family residential customers
  • Reuse water costs less than potable drinking water
  • Customers are able to fertilize less due to nutrients in reuse water
  • OASIS customers can irrigate any day of the week (except between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Customers can determine if OASIS is available in their neighborhood and sign up on www.ICanWater.com. To get started with the connection process, customers may call the OASIS hotline at 954-324-8394, or visit www.ICanWater.com to fill out the Hold Harmless Agreement. The City then takes care of the rest by hiring a plumber, obtaining the necessary permits, covering all connection costs, and completing the inspection process.
