Pompano Beach Connects 1,000 OASIS Residential Customers

On January 27th, the City of Pompano Beach OASIS Reuse Program connected its 1,000th reuse residential customer. Not only will this customer help to conserve our finite drinking water supply, but they can also irrigate any day of the week.

OASIS is an acronym for Our Alternative Supply Irrigation System. It is a reuse water system designed to allow highly treated wastewater that would originally be destined for the ocean outfall to be used on lawns. OASIS water is continuously tested to ensure all local, state, and federal quality and safety standards are met.

Reuse is used at City golf courses, parks, road medians, schools, more than 300 multi-family and commercial properties and 1,000 single-family residential properties in Pompano Beach and Lighthouse Point.

“Reuse water has greatly benefitted our customers by providing a sustainable, drought-proof water supply for irrigation and has conserved over 20 billion gallons of water from the Biscayne Aquifer,” said Mayor Rex Hardin, “This allows us to reduce future potable water demands.”

OASIS offers residents four main benefits:

  • No cost to hook up or annual inspection fees for single-family residential customers
  • Reuse water costs less than potable drinking water
  • Customers are able to fertilize less due to nutrients in reuse water
  • OASIS customers can irrigate any day of the week (except between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.

Customers can determine if OASIS is available in their neighborhood and sign up on www.ICanWater.com. To get started with the connection process, customers may call the OASIS hotline at 954-324-8394, or visit www.ICanWater.com to fill out the Hold Harmless Agreement. The City then takes care of the rest by hiring a plumber, obtaining the necessary permits, covering all connection costs, and completing the inspection process.

What’s Green and Growing? The Pompano Beach OASIS Reuse Program

On February 21st, the OASIS Reuse irrigation program turned on the sprinklers for its 900th customer. Not only will this customer save water and money, she can irrigate any day of the week. In short, her landscaping will stay green all year ‘round and, she’s helping to conserve our finite drinking water supply.

Planning ahead, Pompano Beach officials have consistently invested in upgrading water treatment facilities and expanding reuse throughout the City. OASIS water is highly treated and continuously tested to ensure all quality and safety standards are met, using state-certified plant operators.

As drinking water supplies become more expensive and more challenging to get, the expansion of reuse for irrigation helps conserve drinking water. In fact, because of the OASIS reuse program, Pompano Beach residents have saved more than 10 billion gallons of drinking water.

“OASIS water is a safe, cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to keep green where it belongs—in our lawns and in our customer’s pockets,” said (Randy Brown, Utilities Director). “Our OASIS customers save money, have green lawns and are doing something good for the environment, too.”

Our Alternative Supply Irrigation System (OASIS) offers residents three main benefits:

•   No cost to hook up or annual inspection fees
•   Cost savings to irrigate, and
•   OASIS customers can irrigate any day of the week.

It’s easy to sign up for the program, too. Residents can find out if OASIS is available in their neighborhood, the many benefits of reuse and sign up all on the website iCanWater.com. It’s a matter of filling out a few forms while the City does the rest of the work. That includes hiring a plumber, getting necessary permits and completing an inspection process. There’s lots of information on the website, but customers can call or email for more information.

“It’s great that I can water any day of the week even during a drought” Maria Osgood.

OASIS water reduces the city’s demand on drinking water resources and reduces the amount of wastewater that has to be disposed of. This will indefinitely delay expensive system upgrades that are necessary to handle increased demand. Those costs are passed to customers.

Meet Squirt! The Pompano Beach OASIS Program Mascot

McNab Elementary School 4th grader wins citywide contest to name this popular mascot

POMPANO BEACH – And the winner is…Reese Hartsell from McNab Elementary. Reese chose the name “Squirt” for the sprinklerhead mascot of the Pompano Beach OASIS program, and according to Reese, “Squirt will squirt water all over your lawn.”

The “Name our Sprinklerhead Mascot” contest was open to all Pompano Beach students from April 22 – May 13. Reese won a purple iPod Nano (purple being the color of the pipes that bring reclaimed water to our homes, parks and businesses). Ms. Candyce Rapp, the teacher who had the most entries, won a $100 gift card.

The contest was part of the Pompano Beach OASIS program. OASIS (Our Alternative Supply Irrigation System) is Pompano’s reuse water irrigation system, which enables homeowners to water their lawns any day they want (though they still have to follow irrigation hours). OASIS customers are not tied to watering day restrictions. In short, with OASIS, you decide when to irrigate. You can say, “I Can Water.”

With warmer, drier early summer months, keeping your lawn healthy and green becomes more difficult, which is why connecting to the OASIS reuse water system is the perfect solution. There is no cost for single-family homes to get hooked up to OASIS if it’s in your neighborhood. Users will see savings on their water bills immediately, because rates for OASIS start at 85 cents per 1,000 gallons, compared to $2.24 for potable water. Why wouldn’t you do it? Go to www.ICanWater.com to find out if OASIS is in your neighborhood.
